Negative experience: The lady who cut my hair seemed to be rushing through everything. I initially told her to use a number 2 on the sides because the term “skin fade” didn’t come to mind at that moment. When I later clarified what I actually wanted, she raised her voice and said, “I’ve done what you told me, and now you want something different.” The entire conversation she had with me was really unpleasant, and I didn’t feel good at all throughout the experience. I would have felt much more comfortable if I’d been given the space and time to explain myself. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, even though I didn’t do anything wrong.

Negative experience: Really disappointed with my cut. I could tell that the stylist wasn’t really listening to me when she asked me what I wanted and I got a cut that was WAY shorter than I asked for. Overall I was only in the chair for about 10 minutes. The job was rushed and I’m so disappointed I can’t even look at myself in the mirror. I guess I’ll be wearing a hat for the next few weeks.

Negative experience: Worst haircut ever. Paid $30 for a 10-minute haircut. I had to go to a different barber and was told that the cut was uneven. She was more focused on upselling the texturizing powder.

Fantastic experience: I have course thick hair, my entire life I have had a hard time finding a barber that knows how to cut it. The owner is of Cook Street Barber not only know how to cut it but is also friendly and super efficient. Knocks it out of the park every single time and is done within minutes I come all the way from Cowichan Valley and will not go anywhere else.

Negative experience: Went in a couple weeks ago. When I left I knew she didn't cut my hair how I wanted it, now that's it's growing back in it's super uneven and looks bad. Asked for shorter and was told it's short enough (now it's way too long for only 2 weeks in). Won't be coming back.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to Cook Street Barbershop for just about 2 years now. Every time it's a pleasant experience from the tunes, the decor, the atmosphere & the daily quote. Tony is fantastic, good banter, knows what he's doing & efficient with it. The location is good & the prices are reasonable. If you haven't tried this place yet, you really should.

Negative experience: Since Barber Alexis was busy doing her personal chores whilst haircut therefore the entire set of hair was removed without permission Thankfully i said stop to her unusual hand movements otherwise would have left bald . SURPRISINGLY charged in full with no apology .

Negative experience: Had some pretty abysmal customer service with a barber there named Alexis. Rushed through my haircut like she was breaking a record, left me bleeding with the razor. Previously I got a beard trim, the sign saying $10-15. The guy took off about an eighth of an inch and figured it was worth $15. Inspired me to get my own razor, what a rip. Even though they’re so close by I’ll be finding a new spot.

Fantastic experience: I have started seeing Alexis for my haircuts recently. She is a barber but also cuts women's hair. She is skilled, accurate, and fast. All for a very reasonable price.The end product is always what I envisioned. She is a gem, and I highly recommend her.

Fantastic experience: I finally found my Barber! I have been bumping around from one bad hair cut to another for the past 20 years when my previous barber passed away. Once walking into the doors of Cook Street Barber's I knew my hunt was over and I found my new home. Alexis is great! She gives me a non rushed hair cut with pleasant banter. She listens to what I want and executes it. The environment is warm and inviting with a washroom to use as well while waiting! I want to emphasize this is a non pretentious environment which is a huge plus for me. If your barberless, I hope this review encourages you to give Alexis a shot. You wont regret it.

Positive experience: I had a haircut done by Alexis and I honestly want to cry. I asked for a very conservative trim on the top and way too much has been removed. now I look like Lord Farquaad. Not what I wanted at all. I'm back to hiding my head with a hat. Never had that issue with Rolf or any other barbers over there. Hence the 3 stars.

Fantastic experience: I've lived on the island my entire life and have tried just about every barber shop here. From the upscale spots (you know the ones) to the budget chains, and I can confidently say this is the best place for a haircut if you care about two things: value and quality. The prices here are more than fair, but don't mistake them for competing with bargain chains like Great Value or First Choice—they're not trying to. And that's perfectly fine because the haircuts you get here are leagues better. Many high-end barbershops put on a flashy show, which can get old fast. You see these tattooed hipsters with the same look and attitude, making their record collection their entire personality. But Cook St. Barber is refreshingly different. It's not cliquey. The barbers have real personalities, they're friendly, old school, and they genuinely care about giving you a great cut and making sure you're happy. One barber mentioned, "We like to keep things chill here," and that's exactly how it feels—relaxed and comfortable. They're also incredibly honest, and you don’t just have to take my word for it. Check out the reviews. For example, one customer mentioned being charged incorrectly, and the business responded by saying, "I apologize, I made a mistake. Next one is on me." That kind of accountability is rare these days. As long as these guys are around and operating like they are now, I won’t be going anywhere else. Thanks for being one of the few places where getting a haircut as a guy is actually enjoyable. To the owner: I was in today and just like every other time it was amazing. Thank you so much.

Positive experience: My favorite barbershop in town, had a fantastic experience with all save one. Alexis did more what she wanted than what I asked, cut way too much off, kept saying it's a popular haircut these days (don't care, just wanted what I asked for), and kept trying to push this wax stuff that I said no to five times. Other than that, every visit I have had here is exceptional, and I've been going for years.

Negative experience: Got a fade. Big patches are missing, idk what happened but clearly made very poor choice choosing cook st barber shop . I am not happy and will not be back here for a haircut .

Fantastic experience: Wow. The least judgemental people you’ll ever meet. Let’s just say I had an… unfortunate run in with some kitchen shears at home and the gentleman who cut my hair only chuckled and told me he’d seen worse. As female presenting, I was worried he’d not cut my hair short enough to correct my mess, but he cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. 10/10 service/attitude/kindness! I will be back!

Fantastic experience: I started coming to Cook Street Barbershop a few months ago just looking for a quick walk in haircut, wound up meeting Danielle and have been dedicated to this shop ever since! Danielle is kind, caring, and very skilled at her job. I always leave loving my haircut and enjoying the few minutes I get to chat with her. I can't recommend this shop enough, great atmosphere, easy to get in, and reasonable prices. 12/10!

Negative experience: I am practically bald and went in for a buzzcut which took around 5 minutes, priced at $21. When I was charged, I was charged for a full hair cut. When I asked why, Rolf (the barber) said that it was because he used a foil and "it's like doing it 3x over." That has never been the case there and it has never been the case anywhere else because it's absurd and pretty dishonest behavior. Would not recommend or return to this place.

Negative experience: Got a very average experience that's not worth 28$. Communicated clearly what I wanted on the sides and had me turned away from mirror only to find out in the end that it wasn't short enough.

Negative experience: Really lovely folks here, but that's twice now that I've had my hair cut too short. When you go, make sure you are super clear about how long you want it (and maybe err on the longer side). I asked for nothing to be cut off the top but a few dead ends, and they cut off a good inch or two. It's pretty frustrating when it happens once, let alone twice. Agh oh well. Edit: changing it to 2 stars. I tried to give it some time but it looks pretty bad:(

Fantastic experience: I have gone to Cook Street for about 8 years now. I have never been unhappy with any haircuts. My favourite barber and best haircuts there over the years was with Akram who I was sad to find out was no longer cutting hair for Cook Street. Luckily I was able to track him down through the internet by googling "Akram's Hair Design" and was able to reconnect of another fantastic side comb cut. I wish all the best to Cook Street and fine haircuts I have received over the years and still love their laid back and chill vibe. Though if you were missing and looking for Akram, I also wanted people to know how to track him down. Bryan

Positive experience: Went to another shop nearby and "Everyone went home already" so I wasn't able to get in for a cut, when they were still open for another hour. When I arrived at Cook Street there was 3 people in line in front of me and they were more than happy to cut my hair 30 minutes before they closed. The cut was good, they followed all safety procedures for the pandemic and it was priced fairly. It was easy, convenient, and the staff are friendly and professional, I will be coming back every time I need a cut.

Negative experience: IF YOU WANT TO WEAR A HAT FOR MONTHS THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. if you care for you style, go somewhere else. don’t make a mistake as I did. The barber didn’t care about there job at all. every one got 15 minutes. if not he will rush to make it 15 minutes. I asked for a fade and some corrections then he faced me away from a mirror, shave my hair way too high on the back of my head. that I literally keep it for years to have it that long (I got a very long pun hair). after that he blamed it for miscommunication, not his careless to the job and disrespect to the trade.

Negative experience: I asked for 0.5 inch to be taken off and they cut closer to 1-1.25 inches. A situation I always dreaded came true. The barber faced me away from the mirror during the entire haircut and it was too late by the end. Trusted him as he said he had been cutting hair for 35 years. Went home and showered before writing this just to make sure I give an honest review. My hair is so short now. I just wanted half an inch off. First time I ever left a barbershop feeling less confident. If you have a modern/cool hairstyle I would skip this place. This is more of a generic crew/buzz cut shop.

Service is great! Akram is very skilled and knowledgable, and cares about delivering your best cut; he went out of his way to talk to me about what i was going for and gave pointers on styling ect. Not to mention, he gave me a perfect cut.

Fantastic experience: Cook Street Barber shop is the best mid-priced Barber in town. All there barbers have years of experience and do great work. Rolf has been my go to barber for over 20 years, now as owner of his beautiful new shop things couldn't be better. Oh, and then Rolf was out last time so Akram cut my hair and offered to change it up a bit. He said the cut he had in mind was a bit more modern and inferred I might even get a complement. I was skeptical but gave it a try. Well its a nice hair cut and I was very surprised and pleased to receive two enthusiastic complements from people who had no other reason to comment on my appearance. Thank-you Akram.

Fantastic experience: I've been coming to Cook Street Barber since they were actually on Cook Street. I've since moved to Langford and I still make the trip in town to get my hair cut here. The new location is fantastic and this is truly a staple local business. For years I've had my cuts done mainly by Rolf but have had cuts done by everyone that's come through this shop. Always the cuts have been perfect. They have recently hired a new barber, Akram, and he gas been fantastic. He has lots of ideas on how to tweak what you want to create a great end result. I honestly don't think I've had such a consultative experience before haha.
