Fantastic experience: Great hair cut as always. Updated review because my old review was about their covid mitigation measures! Got my hair cut today by Joey and it made me realize that I think... Every barber there has cut my hair at least once and I've never had a bad one. Not once. I've been coming to this shop for probably 10 years. Joey said that the namesake Father of the shop has had some clients for 50 years. One doesn't last 50 years in Chicago without being good at their business.

Fantastic experience: Story time! As a queer woman, barbershops are daunting. I guess it's easier to cut hair when the customer's hackles are raised. I moved into the neighborhood, tried a few places out but kept bopping around, skeptically booked an appt at this place which had a reeeeal "good ol boys" kinda name. It was already a delicate time bc I had a buzzed head as a solidarity shave w my mom who recently lost her battle to cancer. First time, first step into the door, immediate warm and welcoming vibes. I was relieved, got a quick cleanup then scrammed. Second time, the only available barber was someone I could only, lovingly, refer to as "grandpap" (I'm assuming the father of Father and Son?). I was nervous because when my grandpa looked like grandpap, he had tremors. Grandpap gave me the *cleanest* fade. This second visit is when I knew that place was my new place. I've been sporadically popping in for over two years now and don't even have a specific barber, something I previously would've thought was sacrilege. I always book with "whoever is available" because every single one of em has got it. The best vibes, every time, and so very grateful they're in the neighborhood. Thanks y'all.

Fantastic experience: I was skeptical as my perception was that this place was a very Caucasian establishment. Being brown skinned I questioned if they had experience with coarse hair. I was pleasantly surprised not only by how comfortable they make everyone feel, but, also by their professionalism and attention to detail. Joey, was the barber assigned when I booked online. He was skilled and meticulous -giving me a extremely good Mohawk fade. Father and son barbershop has just gained a new client. I highly recommend this place for all your head/face grooming needs!

Fantastic experience: I don't get haircuts very much because I have horrible anxiety which also means I'm not really sure what to say when I'm asked what I want to do with my hair. Today I came into Father & Sons and had RJ Sr as my stylist and he did such an amazing job. Not only did I feel very comfortable with him but he was also able to give me exactly what I wanted with very poor direction on my part. He just knew the jist of what I wanted and what looked good and executed it perfectly. Big shout out to RJ! I'll definitely book with him again

Negative experience: I don't kno why Doug is a barbor by far the worst haircut I ever had he did not fade my hair in correctly at all and he never lined me up it's like he used one number to cut the top and another number to do the sides I had to go to another place to fix it

Aside from the great service, amazing staff, competitive pricing and friendly atmosphere there is one reason I keep coming back: consistency. I have been seeing the same barber the entirety of my time going here, however, any time that barber is booked solid or not available, I know I can rely on any of the other staff to give me a solid haircut.

Negative experience: I’ve been there before but I didn’t like the work the barber Doug made to myself today. I used to go with joey but he wasn’t available. It’s my fault only for walk in and get the one available. The owners should be more responsible about their barber staff. No everybody have good barber skills and experience. I fell very upset right now because I through our my money to the trash. I won’t never come back to that place. Now I have to go to someplace else to do my beard trim and fix this lame hair cut. My advise: don’t to walk ins and put your head to somebody that you don’t know or if you have a bad feeling just leave!!! Because I had it and I still gave a try! My mistake.

Fantastic experience: Family run business in the heart of Edgewater, this place is awesome. The workers are friendly, and accommodating of all needs. It is a very inclusive barbershop, and I would recommend this place to anyone trying to find a new barber. Pro Tip: Reservations are a must. Try a few different barbers and see who you like best, and then become a regular! My guy is Pete, and he's awesome!

Negative experience: Doug really messed up my hair. He did not give me what I asked for at all. I specified at the very beginning that I wanted a skin fade at the bottom tapered up to a two near the top and I wanted to keep the top longer. I don't think you can call it a fade if the sides are all the same length. He clearly didn't understand how to cut hair with a cowlick. He just used a razor to chop off the cowlick, leaving a weird spot at the top of my head that's definitely not going to grow back correctly. I don't know if it's common practice to have the patron with their back towards the mirror (??), but I really wish I would have been able to steer in another direction during the haircut instead of being spun around at the very end and being shown a product that I disliked. There was nothing left to do by that point. It's really disappointing that I have to walk around like this for a few weeks. I wish there was a way to make it right, but I no longer trust this establishment enough to return.

I’ve been there twice and I’m thrilled. Friendly like I’ve been coming for years. Great cut. I was disappointed when Wayne retired but I’ve found a new home. Great app for scheduling online

Negative experience: Doug is easily the worst barber I’ve ever seen. I honestly don’t know how you can even call him a barber as I could do a better job with 0 experience. I asked to keep my hair long on top and taper the sides into the top and this is what I get instead. The top is too short and also completely uneven and not the same length anywhere and the sides aren’t tapered at all and looks like he just took the razor and cut it without looking. Very disappointed and highly recommend you stay away if you don’t want to look homeless or like your 4 year old kid cut your hair over night. Will be wearing a hat for the next month thank you!!!

Negative experience: I typically see Joey but he was booked, so I went with Martin since he had an open appointment. I *had* a bushy full beard that I just wanted trimmed and taken in at the neck a little bit, maybe 1/8-1/4 of an inch, and touched up but kept long as possible. I requested this from Martin and he repeated it back to me, so I assume he understood. He started lopping off huge chunks of my beard and was extremely rough with no finesse. At one point, he got visibly irritated that I slid down a little in my seat so he couldn’t make a line. He snapped at me to stop moving. He was rough, abrasive, and worked way too quickly. Now I have a beard that’s extremely uneven with three different lengths on my chin alone. If I wanted to chop off my whole beard and get it as short as possible, I would’ve saved my $30 and done it myself at home. Never giving Martin my business again.

Fantastic experience: An awesome haircut! Went there early one Saturday morning on the recommendation of a friend. Lucked into an available appointment with the older gentleman who started the shop. (He's mostly retired but comes in every other Saturday to help because they are so busy!). The care and his attention to detail were spectacular. One of my favorite haircuts ever. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I used to come here for a basic haircut when I lived near the area. The place is very friendly and professional. The business is very original has a taste of a personal brand. My preferred barber was Yvonne. She's one of the best and she always gave great service every time I visited. She's my personal recommendation if you come by and visit. I'm no longer living nearby, so I miss the place. But if you're in need of a haircut, definitely come to this place.

Shout out to Yvonne for expertly cutting my hair for 3+ years now and being so sweet and fun to talk to. During the pandemic, they switched from the old first-come, first-served model to an online appointment system. Being able to book an appointment is efficient and easy. Still cash only, so hit the ATM beforehand. The Chase branch across the street is really convenient.

Fantastic experience: THESE. GUYS. seriously some of the best barbers in the city. They have a range of prices and services, with full neck shave included too! Pete & Mitch have been the guys my partner and I reserve with but I've heard great things about literally all of them. Nice community feel, everyone is friendly and very relaxed. Every time I leave there, I feel like a million bucks! Men's haircuts start at $26. (Though I leave $40 everytime) Reserve on their website and check it out!!! :)

Negative experience: First, this is not directed to the whole Father & Son staff, as I have received wonderful quality service in the past from Mick and Mitch, however the last 2 times I booked Yvonne as my usual barbers were not available. She did a great job the first time therefore I booked her again today. I even brought a picture of the last haircut because I wanted the same cut. To my surprise I noticed she was cutting way to short, specially in the front and when I pointed that out she freaked out. I had to ask her to make it proportional, as nothing was looking right at that point. Just to add some color, when she was fixing it (or trying to) she kept saying “it will grow out in a week” over and over while making panic-cuts on top of my head. I left the place shocked. I knew it was a mess but I couldn’t speak up or complain. I grew my hair for 5 months to be able to style it as I like it and when I though it couldn’t be worst I took a shower at home and noticed that it’s all uneven, I can’t even fix it with gel or style it different. This is by far the worst haircut I ever had. I understand that everyone could have a bad day at work, but I cannot get over the “it will grow out in a week” sort of apology, and the rush for taking me out of that chair. I hope this feedback helps this great local establishment, and in particular to this barber, to grow some accountability skills. Respectfully,

Every barber here is awesome and will go above and beyond for their clients. Personally, I get my hair cut by Martin and I can’t say enough about how great he is every time. This past year, they've met the pandemic challenge with tech and responsible changes: a mobile app for scheduling your haircut, careful respect of distancing and mask wearing, and great check-in procedures. Fantastic experience: I've gotten two haircuts from Martin now and I've been really happy with both. Looking around it seems like everyone is pretty good there. They are definitely taking precautions and it feels safe. I tried a few places in the area before I found them but I am done trying. The prices are average for the area but the work is better in my opinion. There are Tvs you can see from all the chairs and no one has tried to push any product on me which I appreciate.

Negative experience: Don’t go here and ask for a fade, or you’ll get your hairline pushed back and a non blended fade.

Negative experience: Since moving here in July I only went to Arturs. There was a female barber there who was amazing I found out later my next appointment she's no longer there. So tried the other barbers there and just was not happy with their work. So I decided to try Father and Sons and unfortunately same result charged too much for a haircut that I am not happy with. I have zero issue paying money for a good haircut but neither place has impressed me to where I want to go back. First picture is the picture of the haircut I wanted minus the hard part due to my hair growing very quickly. The second is what I ended up with. I also told the barber I want the top of my hair shorter he maybe cut 1/4 inch of hair off. I also requested my hair be thinned out some due to how thick my hair is when it's not thinned out I sweat profusely which ends up causing massive ingrown hairs at the nape of my neck which are painful and neck and back acne. I would be willing to have a different barber from Father and Sons correct this. But I will not pay for a correction that should not have had to happen. It's people like this that cause people to go elsewhere.
