All of the barbers are very friendly, experienced, and down to earth. Joe cut my hair and he’s the man. Good conversations and free beer. Great price cut as well. Will definitely be returning.

Fantastic experience: I struggle with finding barbers. I always look for a local place. Moved to the area 3 years ago. Needed a haircut and found A Better Man’s. Walked in and everyone was so friendly. People complain about prices but even the place I was going to for 8 years in The DC area had raised prices especially after COVID. I usually see Sam. He’s done a great job every time. I get a taper on the side and undercut up top. In the summer I take some length and volume out. Pretty simple. He also will trim my beard and clean it up. Always walk out feeling and looking good.

As I walked in, I was greeted by the man who would cut my hair; Lafayette. Super nice dude, really chill and down to earth to talk to. We went over what I was looking for and got right to it. I love the old school vibe this place and the barbers give while also having a modern feel. TV was on, and everyone in the shop were just chillin and having fun agreeing with what was on for the talkshow. Lafayette did a fantastic job on the cut, and I walked out feeling confident as hell. Next time I'm in the area, I'm definitely coming back! Price is great too btw, ignore the haters.

Negative experience: This place used to be better, I would come in here and get a great cut every time I left. I went in today and it just wasn’t the same. First off the haircut is $40 before tip which is pricey, so I expected a nice cut. My barber just sped through the haircut and I felt like he didn’t put much effort into it. My hair is uneven and the fade was nowhere near as good as it was in the past. How are you going to give me an uneven cut and then charge me $40 before tip? This is ridiculous, I will take my business elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Update 06/12/2024: They have two locations now. This one for this review and now one in downtown Cary* The atmosphere of A Better Man's Barber shop is definitely what keeps bringing me back, that and the amazing haircuts and styles you can get. It's $25 per cut with extra for beard trim and other services but for the quality of the haircut, I believe it's worth it. If you wanna come out looking good and better than you ever did, this place is definitely a must for all guys. Every time you come in, they are always laughing, having a good time, talking about sports. Just feels great being in there and chatting with everyone, it's honestly a nice escape from every day to day when I come in. Every barber there is highly experienced and knows what they are doing. Just let them know what you want and explain to them what type of hairstyle, etc, you need. They will work with you and make you look your best when coming out of that place. Some important things to note. They do have beer which is free (only two servings are free). They only accept cash (they do have an ATM inside). It's first come first serve but if you really like a certain person to cut your hair, just let the next person go ahead of you until you get the one you want. Out of the many times that I have been there, I have never been disappointed with my hair cut, it always look good and presentable, they really take there time making sure your cut looks good. I 100% recommend this place for any dude out there needing a fresh cut, I definitely can't go anywhere else after coming here. Fantastic experience: After recently moving to Raleigh I was dreading finding a new barbershop. Tried a few places out and received subpar haircuts. Found this place, which is a bit out of the way and a bit pricey at $40, but completely worth it. Top notch haircuts and usually not much of a wait either.

Negative experience: If I could give lower, I would. The haircut was fine, if not much more expensive than my usual barber. I only had one out of desperation and this is the result. As seen with this image, a cut that burns at the slightest touch is an inconvenience to the extreme. Perhaps the experience would have been better if my barber focused on me instead of his friends while I'm sitting there and paying $30 for a disaster like this. The barber even shook my hand after I payed him—telling me “good luck”. He knew what he did to me. Never going back.

Negative experience: Update 01/17/2024: The owner Steve connected with me and made things right in regard to my experience outlined below. Needless to say, I appreciate Steve's gesture very much. Nice and pleasant atmosphere. Based on my limited interactions, I've got the impression barbers are genuinely good people - a special shout out to Trevor and Joe in that respect. I was a patron for about a year and a half; Sam was my barber of choice. In terms of sheer ability and skill set Sam is an excellent barber but the quality of his cuts is inconsistent because he often rushes through the haircut, perhaps due to a typical long line of people waiting for him. This especially holds true towards the end of working hours where he would rush through haircut in less than 10 minutes. He seems carried away by the fact his ability allows him to cut faster than an average barber, so ends up abusing it by rushing too much. I have a simple classical slick back haircut that any barber worth his or her salt was able to execute in 20 minutes or so in the past. On occasions when Sam was putting in those reasonable 20 minutes, he would give me a truly excellent cut. That kept me returning hoping we could achieve some consistency. Most of the time, he would put in 10-15 minutes and the cut would still come out very good. The problem however were the occasions when he devoted less than 10 minutes to it and the haircut came out subpar. The last experience was too much: he practically did the whole cut with thinning scissors alone! I asked him some time ago to introduce some light thinning at the end of the regular haircut. This worked fine for a while but eventually he figured out that it's going to be even faster if he reverses the order of steps: first remove bulk of the hair by thinning scissors, and only subsequently use regular scissors to shape the hair. Such an order of steps backfired on the last occasion where he barely used regular scissors at the end, perhaps due to the end of working hours and one customer remaining. I asked upon it with surprise, he assured me he used regular scissors as well. The hair was wet and slicked back so you could not really see issues on the spot. However, once I got home and the hair dried out and came to its natural place, the result was a joke: the longer hairs with old ends were all over the place confirming what was obvious at the spot. The cut was practically done by thinning scissors alone with perhaps a few insufficient strokes of regular ones at best. I prefer a barber with a lesser skillset who puts in 100% effort and respect to a customer to an excellent barber who puts in an inconsistent effort plagued by occasional sloppiness. If Sam wants to raise his level to a master barber and perhaps run his own barbershop one day for which he has all the potential, he will need to learn to treat customers up to American standards. I thank Sam and the owner Steve together with the whole barbershop team for the service over the last year and a half but opting to take my hard-earned dollar elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: The place to go for a haircut, especially if you are flying into Raleigh-Durham Airport and need a cut before moving onto your destination. Great cuts, funny and energetic barbers. There will probably be a line, but it’s worth the wait.

Fantastic experience: Like most guys, I got my hair cut at the closest superchain hair cuttery place. You know the places. Big name chains like Great Cuts or Super Clips, the staff turnover is faster than Tony Stark's R8. No consistency, because you get your hair done by someone different every visit. Even tried "upgrading" to a chain that marketed specifically to men. But turns out, besides the locker room decor, the actual hair cut is no different. And, like most guys, I always left with my hair shorter,but had a nagging feeling that it could be *better*. Then you meet a dude, and he's got PEREFECT hair. Movie star hair. And not just when he just had it done. This guy's hair looked perfect after running half marathons. Made friends with him. Made fun of his perfect hair. But, truth is, I wanted hair like that. I NEEDED hair like that. Took me two years training, running races with him and buying him post-run beers to finally get him to divulge the secret of where he got his hair done. It was not this place. But I went to his place, and boy, my hair WAS better. Not as good as his hair, but a definite upgrade. Eventually, though, that other places hours dwindled and I had to find someplace else. And that's when I found A Better Man's Barber Shop. And, wow. My hair is BETTER than my friend's. Not after races. Still look like a drowned rat crossed with a porcupine. And not in a good way. On top of that, the entire experience here is akin to a local, 1950s barbershop, absent the side of racism and sexism that was prevalent back then. The licensed barbers (not hairstylists, there IS a difference) have been working there for years, remember names and ask about your life. Kind of like a cross between bartenders and barbers. You can even get some beer if that's your thing. And while barbershops may be one of the few remaining bastions of uniquely male experiences, if you're a woman who wants a shorter cut, don't be hesitant to come here. My SO has a shorter cut, and they do an amazing job on her. Great for kids, too. Sure, a place where you can get a straight razor shave is gonna have clientele that trends heavily adult male, and that vibe is definitely there, but it's not like it's rife with off-color jokes or anything. I've been coming here for 8 years. Moved out of state a year ago, but I make sure to get my hair cut here, even though it's a 3 1/2 hour drive. My hair has never looked better. Still looks terrible after a long run, though. But that's on me, not the barbers here. There's a reason they recently opened a second location (and had some of the more experienced barbers move there). They're THAT good.

Positive experience: Great shop but I do not recommend Cody, was not able to fade or blend or line me up. Will have to get it fixed elsewhere, however everyone else does great work.

I asked him to fade it up and to get my hair out of my eyes. As well as a lil off the top of my head. As you can see on the photos. My neck line is crooked,and I still have long hair over my eyes & ears. He cut the hair where my calic which is gonna give me an alfalfa for the next month and messed up the fading. I’m regretting this haircut.

Fantastic experience: I have been coming to this shop for a few years now! Although Sam is my preferred barber I’ve been cut by everyone here at least once and I highly recommend each barber. The prices here are very similar to other barber shops in the area however the amenities and experience here give you more bang for the buck. They have a nice hot towel machine, warm shaving cream, and even their seats are nice and comfortable. I highly recommend this shop not only for their cuts but also for the atmosphere.

Negative experience: If you desire a trendy haircut like an undercut or fade this place is perfect for you and you will be very happy with the results. If you want anything remotely classic or resembling just a "business" cut then RUN far away. I told them exactly what I wanted and showed them a picture of me the day after my last haircut (from elsewhere) and they butchered the whole thing. At this point, I don't think it is even salvageable other than waiting for it to grow back. Extremely disappointed.

Fantastic experience: I went there today for a side trim which started with a nice conversation. Showed the picture which was my long term goal (a pony) and I was suggested just for a trim to the side burns which is what I was expecting as well. When it was complete, I asked for the charges but to my surprise it was waived with a quote "It was just a side trim". I am definitely going to make them my go to shop for any future needs.

Negative experience: JANUARY 22, 2021 UPDATE: I downgraded them to 2 stars. I emailed their website address with my customer complaint below. After 10 days I received no answer. I emailed again and got this non-descript response: "Dear Mr. Crowell, Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed. These are trying times, we are doing the best we can under the circumstances. I hope that you are able to find a shop that meets your needs. Best regards, Scott A Better Mans Barbershop " I’m sorry but how is not requiring patrons to wear masks “doing the best we can?” I have to say that the safety warnings they advertise on their website don't mean much if they won't even acknowledge the mandatory mask policy. People, it's just no worth risking your health and safety, certainly not your life. You are just better off going to a stylist who will see you solo. These guys just don't believe in following North Carolina-mandated rules. --------------------------------- I really was ready to give this place 5 stars. My barber was fantastic, everyone was friendly, and I had really enjoyed the experience. I say, I "had" — UNTIL they had a guy come in and seated him right next to me WITHOUT A MASK. They didn't offer him one, and his girlfriend came in without wearing a mask either. I was flabbergasted. I should have said something about it, just it was as I was being finished and paying my bill. Still, that is no excuse whatsoever. I can't return to any place that won't put my safety first — both customers who don't follow mask mandates and staff who don't make them follow them. Not having any separators between stations makes it worse. It's too bad because it really is an enjoyable place. I want to enjoy being healthy, too.
