Fantastic experience: I’ve been getting my haircut with Ruby Blunt for four years now and she’s never failed me. She’s always let me be creative and try new things while guiding me and supporting me along the way. Ruby is a gem. If you can get a haircut with her, do it.

Fantastic experience: I was in desperate need of a haircut with a stopover at SFO en route to Asia! The Google gods said Ruby at Public Barber Salon would be the answer. The gods were not wrong. Ruby did a great job to make the best of my coif, and she was convivial as well. Pricey by my hometown standards? But I suspect it was a bargain in the Bay Area. In fact, if I found myself with another long layover in SF, I’d be delighted to give Ruby another shot at “taming the beast” that lives a top my skull!

Fantastic experience: My 1st visit to this place, and was fabulous! Amanda did very well, thanks.

Negative experience: I booked an appointment and unfortunately something urgent came up so I couldn't make it. I called just under 2 hours before the appointment but they still charged me the full cost of the haircut ($55) even if I rebooked.

Fantastic experience: Love my bangs. Took couple minutes and cut exactly the way I wanted them. Friendly staff and cool atmosphere

Negative experience: I had a very frustrating experience here. The stylist was clearly technically skilled, but did not listen to what I was asking for. I came in with a reference photo from a previous haircut and tried to explain the look I wanted, but they kept just saying“do you want a 2 or a 3?” with no explanation of what that actually meant in terms of outcome. I’m not a haircut expert, so that number didn’t mean much to me. I kept asking for an explanation - even a few words would have helped on how that would have mapped to the desired look. I initially just gave up and said a 2 because I’d remembered that number mentioned from a previous haircut, but they kept saying a 3 would work better (again with no context), and I went along with that after being told they wanted to “err on the side of longer and fix it later.” Same happened with the top. They just said they were giving me a “standard cut” but the final result looked nothing like the photo. It didn’t really feel like they considered it. At the end, the stylist even acknowledged that a 1.5 would have been closer to what I wanted, but refused to fix it, saying it would be “a whole other haircut” and that we had “agreed to a 3”. That made the earlier framing about erring on the side of longer feel misleading. I left feeling confused and kinda intimidated. This wasn’t worth the money, and I wouldn’t recommend this place unless you already speak their exact haircut language and are comfortable pushing back constantly.

Fantastic experience: I came in for a skin fade with lineup and it came out quite nicely. Steve listened as I explained what I wanted, and kept checking in along the way. All in all it was a great experience for a reasonable price.

Fantastic experience: I have been going to the public barber for many, many years.Then, I moved to new jersey, and then I moved to virginia.Yet I continued to go to public barber at least twice a year when I go to san francisco to visit.It's the only place where I feel comfortable getting a haircut.Because I always look great when I come out.And as we all know, a bad haircut can ruin your day, and they have never ruined my day.I would recommend them to anybody who needs a haircut, a coloring, a styling or anything else

Fantastic experience: I had a great bang trimming experience with Amanda. This was my first time visiting the salon and Amanda. She asked questions to understand my goals and made sure to get my approval before she started trimming my bangs. I’m really happy with how my bangs turned out.

Fantastic experience: Off a whim I went to Public to see about getting a new stylist. Grant street in NB has been my favorite spot in the city so I figured I stay true to what speaks to me. I had the pleasure meeting Danielle who not only brought out my best look, but delivered on my expectations and then some. By far the only person I will let work on my hair. Everything from the staff to the price is ideal.

Fantastic experience: I absolutely loved the haircut Alex gave me! I just moved into the city and was looking for a salon and I’m so glad that I chose Public and am pretty much looking forward to becoming a regular. Everyone including Alex were very courteous and made me feel very welcome.

Fantastic experience: I just had my hair cut by Steve last night. He did a fabulous job and gave me the best shag(ish) cut. I asked him to give me lots of layers and then do what he thought was best in front. He really did a great job around my face and took into account my face shape, hair texture and part. Even though I have super thick hair, he took his time and didn’t rush me out. It’s a great cut! The shop itself is super cool. The owner has outfitted the walls with bookcases to the ceiling that were built by a local wood worker. They are totally packed with antique books. It gives off a warm, welcoming vibe. The salon only uses natural products and nothing with plastics or toxins in it. Extra bonus, they smell great! Overall it was an A+ experience!

Fantastic experience: I booked an appointment last minute the day before my haircut. I had the option of selecting a particular stylist or anyone available. Since it was short notice, I had to opt for anyone and was assigned to Leslie. Overall great experience, from checking in at the front desk to getting my haircut from Leslie in a timely manner. I was very satisfied with the results and recommend this establishment. Great professionalism and positive vibes all around.

Fantastic experience: Booked for a cut with Lindsey and I’m so happy with it! I have recently moved to S.F. and tried a few barbers but Lindsey at public was the best one so far by far. I asked for a lil trim around the ears but that I wanted to grow it out a bit. Many barbers seem to struggle with this and take too much off but she gave me exactly what I asked for while also making recommendations based on her experience. Will def come back as my regular - thanks Lindsey!

Negative experience: I’ve been a loyal customer at Public Barber Salon for years. I’m almost always early for my appointments, yet they constantly make me wait — clearly, they don’t value their customers’ time. Ironically, the one time I was just 10 minutes late, they immediately canceled my appointment while I was still on my way. I called multiple times to let them know, and no one even answered. The message is clear: their time is invaluable, but yours means nothing. It’s disappointing to see how little they care about loyal clients. I won’t be coming back. Replying to the “Owner” Oh, it was 20 minutes now? That’s news to me — and to my call log, which shows I was 10 minutes late and calling repeatedly without an answer. I guess the irony here is rich: after all the times I’ve shown up early and happily waited while your schedule ran behind, it turns out I should’ve been treating your time the way you’ve treated mine all along. Lesson learned.

Negative experience: * 1 week update 12-28-24 Even though, the salon PROVIDED A GREAT SERVICE to me 1 week ago and I was looking forward to come back to them, unfortunately I have to take away the 5 stars rating I gave them and only give them a 1 star rating because they have Discriminated me. They have said that I am not welcomed back to their salon anymore. I don't know why they would say this if I NEVER SAID OR DID ANYTHING WRONG! The only thing I did was to ask for their permission to follow them on their social media like many others do. With what they have said to me, they have made me feel HORRIBLE and WORTHLESS because they are seeing me as not worthy enough to follow them on their social media! To me it's like they are putting me down because a Latino can't be a part of the same social class they are! And therfore, I am beneath them! Is it so wrong to ask for their permission to follow them on their social media? All I can do is Pray for them to My God, My Heavenly Father so he can help them not have prejudice towards others, see that we are all equal, and to find peace in their hearts! And because that's the kind of person that I am, I still wish them the best! 12-21-24 So I let my mustache grow for 2 months and therefore it was starting to look wild hahaha. So I googled Salons/Barbershop that specializes in beard and mustache trims. And public barber salon poped up. I checked their website and the pictures of the the inside of the salon, was retro so I was sold. I messaged them and made and appointment with the hairstylist, Lindsey. When I got to my appointment, the front desk receptionist was super friendly. And I didn't even wait 2 minutes when Lindsey came out. She also was super friendly. She asked me what she could do for me and I said just alittle bit of trimming on my mustache. And she said sure and did her magic. She was so nice because she even recommended me a mustache balm that I can use also for my beard. And I bought it because want my mustache to keep looking freaking awesome the way Lindsey made it Look forward to coming back to Lindsey for my mustache trim!

Fantastic experience: The best. Alicia is such a star. She is insightful, fashion forward and can do a lot of different styles. I'm a very picky customer and just love how she works with me and can provide some style advice. I have always known exactly what I want, but as I get older and my hair changes I really need some guidance and she always has great input for me. This is my 4th visit after having my long hair cut short and looking to grow it back out slowly and try different styles and looks along the way. Super fun and a great experience every time. And Steve the owner is fantastic as well. I am really happy I found this place!

Fantastic experience: Leslie Clemmer gave me a great cut! This was my second time seeing her. She was patient with my indecisiveness, yet quick and efficient. I have very thick hair that she was able to thin out while giving the style I wanted! She’s also super cool and sweet. I have been going to public barber for 3 years and everyone there is amazing, I changed stylists due to schedule conflicts. She also recommended some products suited for my hair which was great! Men’s short hair cuts are very reasonably priced and include shampooing and conditioning. If you’re looking for a professional hair salon with great people and great conversation, I would highly recommend public salon. I will be returning #Public4Life

Fantastic experience: Spencer is an absolute hair god!!! He took me from bright neon pink to blonde in just one session. Something I was told was impossible by many stylists. Every single time I get my hair done I leave feeling so confident and happy! And if you ever had a bad dye/cut you know what a treat this is. He also does many of my friends hair, we do such different things, but he hits it out of the park every time! Before going to Spencer I didn’t even trust Hair Stylist but now I have a very trusted Hair Stylist that I will never let go of.

I came to him with the impossible task of highlighting very dark brown hair without it appearing bronze and while keeping it low maintenance. He worked hard with me to get the color right and now I have the best low maintenance baby lights! For our next adventure he also volunteered to try giving me a bit of a dry haircut as I started to lean into my curls . Most recently, we even partnered up for my wedding! Spencer graciously styled my hair morning of and it was fabulous. He does a great job listening and adapting to his clients’ needs.

She's so sweet and friendly, and I trust her hands down no questions asked with my hair (to the point where I've gotten multiple haircuts the day before a Big Event TM with zero risk all reward). Fantastic experience: I've been getting my haircut from Melissa for a few years now. She's great and does an awesome job! The vibes are cool and I'm able to get in and out pretty quickly at an affordable price. Melissa has been with me through many different styles. I had short bleach blonde hair and then grew out medium curls. She helps me switch it up regularly and it always looks great!

Fantastic experience: I’ve seen Danielle three times now, and I couldn’t be happier! With my long hair, I only get it cut every six months, but each visit is worth the wait. Danielle introduced me to the dry cut, which has been a game-changer – not only is it super affordable, but it lets her shape my hair in a way that really works for me. She’s a great listener, understanding what I want, but also offering her expert recommendations that make the cut even better. Last time, she added a signature touch – little hairs in front of my ears to soften my face when I pull my hair back – and I absolutely love them! Danielle is a master of her craft, and I’m so grateful to have found her!

Fantastic experience: Melissa Gonzales is a rockstar, plain and simple. I have a beard. Longish. And long hair. Curly-ish. I love it—but it needs a stylist who can do beard work. Barbers can't... cut it. Literally. They butcher it. It needs layers. It needs someone who can rock the scissors and the clippers. I've been seeing Melissa for more than 5 years. Also, great location!

Negative experience: Awful men’s cut. Amateur hour and nowhere close to the expertise you would expect paying $60+. Spent about 15-20 mins tops on the cut and lacked any finesse with a mediocre attempt to style after. Knew I was cooked when she haphazardly waved the blowdryer around on max without a care in the world

Fantastic experience: Been going to Public for 6+ years now and can say they’ve always been the kindest, treat-you-like-fam shop. Alicia is my go to for a fade on the side and long hair cuts. She’s got a particular skill for shaping a cut that works with your head. It’s a knack not every stylist has which is why I’ve brought my partner and brother to get cut by her. She accentuates you.

Fantastic experience: Leslie is the best barber I've ever had. When my previous barber moved away a couple of months ago I was worried about finding a new one, but Leslie is better than I could have hoped. She gets the details right with my fade and my pickiness on the top haha. 100% recommend!

Fantastic experience: Alex Luciana has been cutting my hair for the past two years and it has been nothing short of amazing, he is a true master of his craft. You can tell he puts in the extra care and effort - going back and forth cutting small pieces to perfection. It always makes my day better when I get to have a conversation with him as well. Fantastic experience: Recently visited Public Barber Salon for a haircut and it was fantastic. Received a great haircut and we had great discussion on life items. The shop has a warm feeling and the entire staff was very friendly, specifically the receptionist! Great vibe and highly recommend for a great cut.

Fantastic experience: Going to a barber shop is not my usual thing, being a woman with long hair. I had heard great things about Public Barber from other female friends and I was so pleased to give them a chance! The atmosphere was cool and comfortable without the pretensions you can sometimes encounter in traditional salons. My stylist treated me with respect and finessed my hair beautifully! I love Public Barber!
