Fantastic experience: GREAT haircut. Even better experience! Went in for a restyle, not knowing really what I wanted, and Tom gave me an amazing cut – makes me feel like me. Also, Tom spoke me through what he had done and gave me useful styling advice. Moreover, the chair chat was actually interesting, like I was having a conversation with a friend I haven't seen in a while. I should not this personable tone started at the door, the whole team put me at ease. I will be back!

Fantastic experience: Amazing haircut. Great atmosphere. I like that the people who work here obviously enjoy each other's company and enjoy working at Ruffians. At the same time, I know my barber is really focusing on me and my hair. It feels like the barbers always take just as much time as they need to get the effect the customer wants. Also, barbers, like dentists, have to be good talkers, and my barber, Craig, is a great talker. UPDATE December 2025: Still an amazing barber shop, but for the last 18 months or so I've worked with Charles, who is a fantastic barber, a great talker, and a supernice guy.

The open-plan central cutting area created a really social and friendly vibe – it felt more like a community than just a barbershop, with clients and barbers chatting easily with one another. My haircut was top-notch – genuinely one of the best I’ve ever had. What really stood out, though, was the expert advice I received on how to manage and style my hair. It was tailored specifically to me and delivered in a way that made it easy to understand and apply. For the first time, I’ve actually been able to recreate the style at home, which is a game-changer. Can’t recommend Ruffians highly enough – top-tier service, great people, and an experience that goes beyond just a haircut.

Negative experience: Unfortunately a pretty poor overall experience, was looking for some guidance on how to best style my hair, was given pretty vague answers. Craic was good throughout the cut but the end result was very poor, both sides of my head look like they had 2 different cuts. I had asked for a simple taper and one taper was low and the other was high. Despite booking the extensive beard trim, lasted about 4 minutes and my beard was trimmed down to 2 different lengths on either side. Honestly not the experience or haircut I was hoping for considering the prices they charge.

Fantastic experience: I've been a regular at Ruffians Edinburgh since I moved to the city two years ago, and I can't thank Laura and Charles enough for giving me the best haircuts I've ever had. For the first time in my life, I actually look forward to my haircuts! They always make me feel at ease, and I know with certainty that I’m in great hands. Even though Laura and Charles are the ones who cut my hair, the whole team has been incredibly welcoming. Plus, they’re always so lovely to my dog, Frodo, which means a lot. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Absolutely stellar cut and service from Robyn at Ruffians. Wanted to treat myself to a premium cut and see what the difference would be from a Turkish barbers. The atmosphere in Ruffians is lovely, it feels upmarket, stylish, even the waiting area has a wee touch of class to it that you definitely don't find in a more run of the mill barbers. I'm a baldy with a beard so this was really a beard style and a buzz cut. Drinks were free, and staff were lovely, even noted smiles from staff as I walked in the door (contrast to my previous barbers scowling). I've had cuts with Ellen and now Robyn and both ladies are delightful with great, friendly chat. My cut this week was just bang on, absolutely perfect and I'm really pleased I tried Ruffians. Hot towels, straight razor treatment, the works. I'll definitely be back. Thanks so much!

Fantastic experience: Got an express beard trim. Very good experience. Will go again

Negative experience: The front looks good, but the back is hard to describe. I am very sad. I spent 69 pounds to book a senior stylist in the store, for Re-style, but she did not give me her judgment and advice. She just looked at the pictures I provided and listened to my general description. Forgive me for not speaking English well, this is my problem. But I can't accept the final result. The short hair is thick and clumsy. She did not handle the back properly and did not make any design based on my flat back of the head. I told her that my hair is thick and hard, but she did not use this as any valuable reference. She cut the whole process with wet cutting and asked me if I was satisfied with the back. It looked fine when it was wet, but it was completely different after blow drying. She did not show it to me and did not do any trimming after blow drying. It is unbelievable that the hairdresser who cuts short hair does not trim it again after blow drying. I am already incoherent and cried for a whole afternoon. It is hard to accept that I have become like this.

Fantastic experience: Charles did an absolutely amazing job. Despite the time pressure that I’ve created by answering a phone call during the consultation, he was very patient, informative, and adjusted until I was fully happy with my haircut. Now a few days down the road I’m still just as happy with my haircut as when I stood up from the chair - excellent chap both in terms of hairstyling as well as customer treatment. Fantastic experience: First of all, love the atmosphere in here, firstly when I walked in I was greeted by a gentlmen who assisted me with my booking, I was then offered a drink (I got a coffee but there’s soft and liquor available also) he sat me down in a nice area as I waited for my haircut as I was early, once he has stored my hoodie and other stuff I had with me. Once I was ready for my haircut my hairdresser Lennie had a conversation about what I wanted for my hair and what style I should go for, I gave Lennie free rein on what to do as I didn’t know what I wanted done as I wanted something new. All I can say is Lennie was very knowledgeable about what he is doing, he had amazing customer service and of all he gave me a great haircut, he managed to make my hair look good again which is quite hard because of the type of hair I have. If I could give this place 6 stars I would, I can highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a new haircut. I will be returning again in the future.

Fantastic experience: The best barbers in Edinburgh! I’ve been going for a while now- Robyn is the best! The shop has a really nice atmosphere and it’s always a really good experience. And the thing that really impresses me is that Robyn and her team always give you the haircut and style you expected- something that’s not always the case at others!

Fantastic experience: Been coming to Ruffians for the past few years and the experience is always great. Team are fantastic- especially Robyn who's become like a good friend. Started coming when I was a student in Edinburgh- but for the past while have been travelling from Glasgow as I couldn't trust anyone else with my hair now!

Negative experience: Been to ruffians twice. First time just before Christmas I went I was with the graduate and he was around 20-30 minutes due to a big job before me I get it happens. He done a good job with chatting to me about a plan for my hair etc as I wanted to grow it out and change it. 2nd time I went it was a qualified barber whom was 15 minutes late. I had a dentist appointment an hour and 5 mins after my appointment and I did ask on the phone the length of appointments to time them well together. When I arrived it took 10 mins for someone to take my jacket and I wasn’t offered a drink. I’m not particularly bothered by that normally but 3 other gentleman came in after me and were offered their jackets taken right away and a drink offered. The barber who was meant to be doing my hair even went and made one a coffee even though he was running 15 minutes late so that left me felt like the barbers / shop really don’t respect clients time and felt like I was not as welcomed as other clients. As I wanted a change to my hair I felt uncomfortable taking a shortened appointment as I’d still be paying 42 quid for a 25-30 minute appointment as I’d have to leave to get to the dentist when it should have been a 45 minute appointment. Left feeling disappointed as I’d taken afternoon off work to run errands and it wasted this.

Fantastic experience: Been going every month or so for over a year to get my beard done. Really professional and accomodating barbers. Even my personal trainer has the same barber as me. Stewart is a top choice. Also, free drink when you arrive, including a few cocktails. Very nice.

Craig took the time to ask the right questions and suggest ideas when I didn't have a solid suggestion. Fantastic experience: Great experience!!! First time in a more upmarket barbers, never paid more than £15 for a haircut but I will 100% be back. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there, complimentary drink upon arrival, friendly staff, relaxing hair wash followed by a scalp massage was something I had never experienced and now there's no looking back. I got my hair cut by Ellen, and she was amazing. Bright, happy, chatty and really easy to talk to. I wasn't overly sure what I wanted when I went in and she gave me some suggestions, and by the end I left with probably the best haircut i've had! It's a week later and it's still sitting great and seems like it will grow into a much better shape (growing it out). Highly recommend :D see you all again in a couple months

Fantastic experience: I'm visiting Edinburgh, dropped in today for a much needed cut and I'm happy to report it was easily one of the best haircuts I've ever had. Craig is a super friendly guy and is truly an artist when it comes to cutting hair. He really has a passion for it and it shows. He explains what he's doing and why every step of the way. Also just a fun guy and easy to talk to. When I left my appointment and saw my reflection in a shop window I actually said out loud "damn, this is a great f*****g haircut!" Fantastic experience: I've been going to the Edinburgh Ruffians and to Laura for a good few years now. I'd find it next to impossible to trust anyone else with the face fuzz. This was a different visit, though. My 16yo son was getting his first full-on hot towel shave. Now, my kid is autistic and has sensory issues. Also doesn't like surprises and is suspicious of new things. Laura and I chatted before The Boy sat in the big chair. She was magnificent, explaining everything, asking questions, and making everything so easy. Never patronising, never dismissive, never forcing anything. At the end of it all, my son was so happy. He passed on the greatest compliment he can give - he'd happily do that again. Thank you, Laura, and all the brilliant folks at Ruffians in Edinburgh.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to Ruffians for years and really like the place. Stewart is a great barber and very easy to talk to. I always get a full 45 minutes and a great cut plus a head massage and a coffee/tea (or sometimes something stronger!). Definitely my favourite barber shop in Edinburgh

The customer experience is brilliant; bringing together a modern twist on gents grooming with a classic barbershop feel in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Your stylist will (after they've given you a complementary beer or soft drink :) ) listen to what you want, talk through it, and will give you a top-notch cut every time. I 100% recommend getting your haircut here (particular shoutout to my stylist, Robyn!), you'll never want to go anywhere else!

Fantastic experience: Ruffians edinburgh provide such an amazing service. I’ve had Tom as my barber for around 6 months and he does a fantastic job on each occasion. He’s also kind and has great chat! Tom first cut my hair before my wedding when I was looking for a new style and not feeling particularly confident with my hair thinning. Tom was able to cut my hair in a style that really suited me and made me feel more confident. He’s something of a magician and I’d honestly go nowhere else. Would highly recommend Tom and all at ruffians.

Negative experience: It's a nice place, they're friendly and chatty, but they messed my hair up so bad I'm literally going to shave my head. The day before I start a new job. I'm not sure if she didn't understand what I was wanting, but I showed her a photo of my hair from 6 weeks ago, and now I look like Matt bloody Hancock. Gutted. They are nice though, and from what I saw, nobody else's hair got mangled beyond all human recognition.
