Negative experience: Hello, I wanted to share some feedback regarding my haircut today. Unfortunately, it was not the best experience. When I was told that the reason my haircut turned out the way it did was because my hair was “standing,” that didn’t feel like a professional explanation. I’ve gone to the same barber for about five haircuts over the past few months and have consistently requested the same style each time. I do appreciate the offer to comp (which I didn't accept) the haircut due to the mistake — that gesture did not go unnoticed. However, by the time it was offered, the issue had already occurred. Out of respect for the barber and their craft, I won’t name them. That said, I believe it’s important that barbers communicate clearly with guests if they’re seeing something that may affect the outcome before proceeding. A quick heads-up during the service would go a long way.

Fantastic experience: I came here twice in the last year and was helped by Austin then Acacia and both were super professional, helpful, and friendly. I got exactly what I asked for and had a great experience with both barbers. The shop has a great vibe and decor and there’s free drinks and a free arcade game. This is my new barber shop.

Fantastic experience: Used to be my go to until I moved to OC. Still come back here and there, I might just have to wait until I visit SD again for haircuts, because it's the best barber shop hands down. Last cut was with Austin. Been trying to grow my hair out, and she was great at listening to my concerns and giving me some good suggestions. Got another great Pappy's cut and of course the free cold brew and Dr. Pepper rock.

Fantastic experience: I've had long hair and have loved it for as long as I've had it, but it was time for a change. All I have to say it that all the fear of cutting my hair was all for nothing. They took every suggestion I had for my hair and made it exactly how I wanted it, and I am so happy with the result. Thank you Austin for making my hair exactly as I envisioned and shout out to the rest of pappys for creating a great vibe in your shop and having great barbers.

Fantastic experience: Pappys is so awesome! The aesthetics of the salon alone are enough to bring us back. It was really easy to make an appointment and Eddie took his time and was really kind to my son and me. My other son and I got to play Mortal Kombat and drink coffee while we waited. They have the most adorable bar with free drinks and candy. There is even cold brew on tap. Eddie hooked my son up with a really cool and trendy cut. This will be our go to salon from here on out.

Fantastic experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve been to a lot of barber shops, but Pappy’s really stands out. Super relaxed atmosphere, easy conversation, and you never feel rushed. The barbers take their time and make sure the cut is exactly what you want. Walked out feeling great and got compliments right away. This is the kind of place you keep coming back to.

They are a very classy and professional barbershop that offers a free soda or coffee while you wait for the haircut or even after the haircut.

Negative experience: I wouldn't recommend this place if you just want a haircut. They definitely went over the top with a hot towel and a message and the complimentary drinks. Was charged $40 for the experience. They're cash only and their ATM has a $3 fee.

He had an overall very positive experience, the atmosphere and conversation being relaxed and friendly. Everyone is happy when the teenager is happy! Great place.

Negative experience: Got my hair absolutely destroyed here two weeks ago and have been simmering on this since. I came in initially because a small portion at the front of my hair caught fire. I asked Rene for "split ends off plus an inch, and blend the front", then showed what I meant with my hands. I then made the mistake of calling this "medium length" - Rene then asks "okay, so medium length all around?" to which I respond yes, assuming that he would go by the length i had showed by hand. He ended up taking an additional four inches off what I had showed him, and doing this all around. The cut ended up looking incredibly goofy, so I came back the next day and had him adjust the cut. After the second adjustment, he left the right side of my hair about three quarters of an inch longer than my left. What was his advice? "You should have left it the length you came in at" "It might be time to buzz it off and start fresh" As the person who cut my hair, after ignoring my request during consultation, this is a completely unacceptable thing to say. Are you kidding me ? I ended up taking a buzzer to my sides at home, but the cut is still the farthest thing from how i want to look. Rene has singlehandedly set my look back about eight months, and I deeply regret visiting this butcher shop.

Fantastic experience: Need a Haircut? Ask for Ms. Austin at Pappy's Barber shop. I met Austin back in 2019 when I was living on Camp Pendleton and she was working in Oceanside. I came in late on a Friday night around 8:50 pm, literally right before closing. Even though she already had a customer in the chair, she didn’t hesitate to tell me to sit down and stayed late to get me in. That spontaneous moment turned into a friendship that will last forever. I desperately needed a haircut for the next day, and I was floored that she went out of her way to help me. Since then, I’ve continued going to Austin as she’s moved shops over the years. She’s an amazing barber who also specializes in color. Every haircut I’ve gotten has been fantastic, and the times she’s dyed my hair, it turned out amazing. Because of her skills and personality, I’ll follow her wherever she goes... she’s truly the best barber and stylist you could ask for. Don't be foolish. Go to Austin. You won't regret it. :)

Fantastic experience: I found this spot by chance. Walked in and found out it was by appointment only. And left this spot thinking that sucks. Went and got my haircut elsewhere. Was completely unhappy with the haricot I received at the other spot. So I made a appointment with Rene and I received literally the best haircut as well as experience at a barber shop ever. And I've stayed loyal to getting my haircut by Rene for over a year now. And it has been the way you would want it to be. Damn near picking up our conversations where we left off and the atmosphere is Hella dope, music,free drinks cold brew on tap as well as candy and even a old school video game. And I've had to get my haircut from Bo as well as Acaica and my three kids get haircuts from here regularly. And the experience for them from any and all staff has been completely perfect. I'd like to consider myself as a person who pays pretty close attention to things and from what I see all the staff at Pappy's are completely capable of delivering the same treatment and service. And to top it off the owner is around the shop quite often and is always chill and down to shoot the shit with the customers as well. So yup I give this spot all the stars possible hit it up you won't be disappointed

Negative experience: Nice shop layout and decent atmosphere. Customer service was okay, but my haircut felt rushed and not worth the premium price charged. Either the barber was having an off day or lacked experience. The lineup was chopped and uneven, which should never happen at this price point. I wanted to say something during the cut, but I could already feel and observe that the barber was having a bad/off day, so I was uncomfortable speaking up. As a fellow business owner, I find this disappointing—when customers pay for a premium service, they expect time, skill, and attention to detail. Good haircuts take time, and from start to finish, this felt more like a quick cash job than a quality service. This review is also subjective to how the owner chooses to respond—it will say a lot about what first-time customers can expect, especially if the reply ends up being a generic, dismissive response

Negative experience: The place is clean. The service is good. The talent is present. However, they do not listen. I used to have a long beard. I have used their services a few times for a beard trim. I have only repeated the same barber once. I have not left happy after any visit. The first few times I gave them the benefit of doubt, maybe I was not communicating properly. I was always left with a too short beard and a rounded finish. This last time, I don't know how I could have been clearer. Keep the length. Straight down the sides. Square off the bottom. I put my glasses back on afterward, and my beard is cut in half. Half of the length is gone. And, it is rounded. Before, my neck was covered. Now my neck is exposed. A beard to my chest is now just thick facial hair. I was so mad I just paid the woman and left. I can not find a barber there I like. Those of you who read this warning but still go, I hope they listen to you. Myself, I am searching for a new place after my beard grows back.

Negative experience: Had a really disappointing experience over the phone with someone named Renee. I called to ask about the difference between the Premier side and the regular side of the shop, and I was honestly shocked at how rude and argumentative he was. He seemed irritated from the jump—short with me, defensive, and dismissive of my questions. It almost felt like he was upset he wasn’t working the Premier side himself. I asked what made the Premier side different, and all he said was “they charge more,” but couldn’t give any clear reason why. When I asked if the barbers there were more experienced or if the service was better, he told me they all do the same work and have the same experience. I pressed again because that just didn’t make sense—and instead of helping, he got even more rude and combative. I eventually asked to speak to someone who actually knew what they were talking about, and he got snappy, saying he knew what he was doing. Thankfully, the next person I spoke to was respectful and actually helpful. He explained that the Premier side includes barbers with 5+ years of experience, higher-quality cuts, and a stronger, more established clientele. He even invited me to check out the website and stop by the shop. To the owner: I hope you’re aware that this is how some of your employees are representing your business. The first guy I spoke to made a terrible impression, but the second guy helped turn it around. That kind of contrast really highlights who cares and who clearly doesn’t UPDATE: After leaving my original review, the shop reached out and offered me a free haircut to “make things right.” The part that surprised me? They wanted me to book that cut with the same person I complained about. When I said that didn’t make sense, they basically told me to go find another shop. Rather than actually address the issue—being spoken to rudely and getting attitude when asking a fair question—they defended the barber and dismissed my concern entirely. Their response didn’t feel like an effort to make things right. It felt like they just wanted to say they offered something, so they could move on.

Fantastic experience: I personally loved this place the long hair stylist that cut my hair I asked for layering and a blowout taper and I was confusing and she did me so good I got compliments for a whole entire week went from a flat bowl cut to an amazing layered textured haircut and I think this is the best barber shop in La Mesa probably in all of San Diego in my opinion at least I would recommended this place to anyone who needs a blowup for this summer or just in general pappys is the way to go thank you and give them a shot.

What I appreciate about this shop is that it never feels weird walking into it because you just feel like you walked into a welcoming space where everyone is a homie. Although I have my favorite barber, my boy Pat always taking care of me, my favorite thing about this barbershop is that you can’t go wrong with any of the barbers here. They will all take very good care of you with the crisp perfect cuts. So if your favorite is not in that day and you have a hot date, you want to clean up, no worries because they got you. Check them out…you won’t regret it!

Positive experience: I lived in Point Loma for years and have a barber in the area that I really like and went to for all of my haircuts while I lived there. I recently moved and was looking for a new barber that is a closer drive to my new apartment. I tried Pappy’s and got Pat and he was great. Cut my hair pretty similarly to my old barber. I booked appointments with him two more times, both great. I feel I should leave a separate review for specifically Pat because he really did do a good job. To make a long story short, I booked an appointment today with a different barber because Pat was booked out. I had about an hour and a half window before I had to make a work appointment but that would have been plenty of time. I arrived and checked in and the desk guy points and says she will be your barber today. I look over to a girl cutting someone’s hair and I assume she’s going to be finishing up soon. After 30 minutes past my appointment she is still cutting this guys hair and I tell the front desk guy that I have to leave and to cancel my appointment. He doesn’t remember me checking in and asks “you have an appointment?”. I tell him yeah it was scheduled 30 minutes ago. He asks who it’s with and I point to the girl. He goes and asks her “are you running behind?” She tells him yeah. He tells me “oh I wish you would have told me you couldn’t wait, I would have set you up with another barber”. Nobody communicated to me that my barber was running (at least) 45 minutes late. I checked in and sat across from the check in desk for over 30 minutes. No communication at all. I was irritated and definitely never going to book with this current barber again but what set me off to “leave a review” mad was this guy telling me that I should have let him know I couldn’t wait for 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment to get a haircut when nobody told me that my barber was running that late. It feels like I wasted time that I didn’t really have to waste today and now I’m out of luck on getting a decent haircut before an event tonight. It’s very frustrating. I don’t know. Place seems like they give good haircuts. Pat is great and was always on time. But after this interaction I’m not coming back. I would rather drive to Point Loma where I can both get a haircut I like and my barber is almost always on time but at least communicates to me when he is running late.

Fantastic experience: A barbershop with a great old school vibe. Been coming here for two years now. I have received a great haircut every time. Cash only but with an ATM on site. The price to pay is well worth every penny. I recommend coming earlier in week because weekends are packed. I would also suggest booking an appointment online. Walk-ins are accepted but you might get turned away if it’s busy. Again, a great old school barbershop with great barbers. Pappy’s is awesome.

Fantastic experience: Here’s a summary of my experience here, I’m not a SD native so moving here 5 years ago and trying to find a barbershop was a challenge as it is. Some are too loud, some aren’t clean, or even the culture isn’t the best, not very welcoming. But here come Pappys….the GOAT. It truly feels like home when you’re getting a fresh fade. The barbers there are so attentive once you walk into the building seeing that your needs are met. they even massage you after your cut is don’t with a machine. Every barber here looks happy and passionate to work here, it’s always clean and they always offer you an ice cold drink (which is included with the cut). The vibe inside is that classic barbershop which is pretty dope. Unfortunately I’m moving in a couple months and my experience here will come to a close, I will genuinely miss this barber shop and the barbers!! (Especially Bobby) 10/10.

The barbershop atmosphere was clean, welcoming too with refreshments and retro vibe. Acacia clearly takes pride in her craft, and it shows in the results. Fantastic experience: We love Pappy’s. We take my son here and he will not go anywhere else! Rene always gives him a great hair cut! I love the shop, the atmosphere and the retro decor. Fantastic experience: Since moving to San Diego for school, I have been going to Patrick at Pappy's regularly as he gets me right every time and the atmosphere inside the shop is very welcoming and relaxing.

Fantastic experience: Best barbershop I’ve ever been to. Bobby is a great barber. I always leave smiling like a dummy after he turns me to the mirror to show me the finished cut. The hot shaving cream finish and hot towel along with the shoulder massage makes it hard not to fall asleep on the spot! Super relaxing.

Fantastic experience: First time there, I got Anthony to cut my hair just the way I wanted with a clean comb over and a mid fade. I loved the atmosphere and the vibes of inside with the rest of the barbers. Definitely coming back!

Fantastic experience: Nikki (Nicole?) gave me the best haircut I've had in years. I asked how long she's been cutting hair and she said around 15 years. I like that. I can tell how confident she was with the buzzers, comb, the sharp scissors next to her fingers, I know she is a pro. She was also super connective and also the shop is clean, bright and welcoming. Best Mens Haircut I've ever had for sure. I felt pampered with the lotion, straight razor and a hot towel at the end. Thanks for the experience Nikki!

Fantastic experience: Hello I think Pappy’s barbershop is super dope. Always very tidy and clean. Extremely professional. I am consistently greeted every time I come in for a cut. Acacia had always been so kind and patient. I had a skin condition on my scalp and it is very hard for me to feel comfortable getting a haircut. I have been with barbers in the past that have gotten frustrated or given me a sloppy cut. I have been seeing Acacia for well over a year now and she has always helped me look my best. Pappy’s is a really welcoming barbershop. They offer refreshments and there is always a great conversation to be had. I recommend Pappy’s to anyone that compliments my hair! Fantastic experience: Moved to San Diego from the pacific north west, everyone knows finding a barber can be a chore. Found this place almost two years ago and the vibe and cut is . David is my go to since the begining and is very friendly and easy to talk to/suggest on the cut. Everyone at Pappy's is nice and welcoming and it instantly gets five stars for the gorilla biscuits album poster.
