Positive experience: I went for a haircut at around 4.45 on Tuesday 03/02 and have honestly been given one of the worst haircuts I’ve ever had. Terrible terrible cut , the bloke seemed to have no idea how to cut hair and now I’m left with a mess and no confidence to go around until it can be fixed which I don’t know when it can be. The fade is shocking and done so high up. Still had to pay even though he could see I was very unhappy and he tried to tell me that I should ask for the right thing next time. The haircut is what I have always asked for and every other barber I've been to in the past have done it right from what I said. If you’re unsure as a barber speak to the customer don't just take loads off and completely ruin someone’s appearance for the next couple months. Edit: upgraded to 4 stars due to the shop owner going above and beyond by rectifying my haircut and refunding the previous haircut.

Positive experience: 07/09/25 Always had good service. The past 2 times asked them to tidy my beard and both times it has been cut short. Unfortunately I will have to find somewhere else for my beard maintenance now. If you get the owner he does an outstanding job its just a shame he's not been working when I've been in.

Negative experience: My previous review five stars: "Fantastic barbershop, I had a great experience here. Great skin fade and close shave with hot towel experience. Thank you". Went again today 18/08 and was met with a sleeping barber unable to cut my beard evenly, when I asked him to take another look he started taking chunks out without taking a proper look. Disappointed after a great previous experience.

Fantastic experience: We were visiting the UK and my son wanted a haircut. Stumbled upon Holgate Barber shop in York, England. Glad we decided to get his haircut here. Farman is awesome and understood my son’s requirement for a gradual fade. He did a fantastic job! Highly recommend this place.

Negative experience: Used to be good but my latest trim I was left very disappointed. Missed parts of my beard, shaving rash all over my neck that was sore for a couple of days afterwards. Felt very rushed compared to the normal chilled service they used to give.

Negative experience: ⭐ minus 5 Star I’ve been a loyal customer here for over 3 years, coming in every month and always paying £25 without any issues. But today’s experience was the worst I’ve had. I went in for a skin fade, beard trim, and shape-up — which the board clearly says includes a hot towel service. I was suddenly charged £29 with no explanation. When I asked why, I was told “that’s the price” without any breakdown. Only after questioning it was I offered the hot towel — which was honestly disgusting and smelled bad. When I calmly raised my concern, instead of listening, the barber told me I didn’t need to come again. After years of loyalty, that kind of response was incredibly unprofessional and disappointing. Not how a regular customer should be treated.

I looked like a troll when I rocked up to their Door travelled from London unannounced (after walking a number of streets in York) they welcomed me in without appointment, immediately in the chair’ for what I consider a ‘proper’ treatment £28……. Cut/shave/shape/wax of certain face and head orifices and a Hot Towel!!. I probably still look like a troll. But my Hair’ Skin and Beard are on Point!!!! Wholly rated customer service and professional scissors were on hand’ I was offered a hot or cold drink too!! Highly recommended by me. The troll thank you Holgate Barbers
