Experiencia negativa: I received a haircut here last year on the 4th of April. I initially booked with Kelsey due to her outstanding reviews and extensive experience with the expectation that I would be seeing her. Unfortunately, two days before my appointment with her, I was manually switched to Cali, which I did not confirm or select, which means the store switched me to her without confirmation. (See pictures below for proof) While Cali gave me a decent cut, I had the expectation of going with the most experienced barber which I selected prior. I didn't appreciate this being switched up, and after reviewing the comments it seems as if this is a standard practice here. I didn't receive the shampoo that was advertised with the full cut, nor was I offered a complimentary beverage. All in all I was disappointed based on how many good reviews this place had. I would give the business another shot but due to the fear of being switched to a different barber, I will keep my business elsewhere.

She's a total pro and gave me a better haircut in under 30 minutes than I've had in twice the time at other shops. Can't wait for the West Ashley location to open up next month!

Experiencia negativa: First time I went here it was great, I was able to call in and they didnt require any extraneous online booking or online confirmations. And it really seemed oriented towards locals and men, great. The last time it was a horrible experience, she shaved my beard in such a way as to spill my hairs into my complementary beer, then didnt offer me another one or apologize or anything. Then she did a very unimpressive 5 min trim I could have done at home. All the while playing angry young black girl hip hop the entire time, super ratchet, when this is supposed to be a guys barber shop mind you... Then the 3rd time was even worse. I tried to book again just over the phone and they refused. They forced me to do a txt confirmation which leads me to a website where I have to fill out personal information... Seriously...just for a $20 beard trim. They refused to let me book a shave over the phone without getting email and credit cards involved. I am a local, I told them they are about to lose my business and they said "sorry its just our software". They seriously used that cliche line as if I was in a TV show making fun of this sort of thing... This place sucks and is officially not local friendly

I never really like my hair cuts or my hair style/type but this was easily the best hair cut I’ve had. Emma was really cool and extremely helpful with shaping and styling my hair. I've been going for over a year now, and while Kelsey locked in on my cut and style nearly immediately, she somehow continues to impress even more on each visit. I've sat in Ellery's chair for a scissor cut and she is wonderful as well. Whether you need a tight knight fade or some flowy action with the shears, they DO NOT MISS. The ladies are all awesome and its a great energy from the moment you step inside. If you're new to town or looking to switch things up, don't think twice. This is your spot.

Experiencia negativa: I was going to get my fade last Friday, requested denise, bc they'd already cut my hair in August, but said they'd be out of town Friday, so made the appointment for Thursday, with them, i had already been here once before, i was wanting them to cut my hair smidgen shorter this go around. so skipped lunch break, and made the over 1 hour drive to James Island, got there early, person at the desk said they would be with me soon. Only for another stylist to tell me to go their chair, so I went, i have no idea the individuals name, they didn't know what I wanted, so I showed them a picture of what it looked like and when Denise had cut it, and Said if I could please get a little bit shorter, they said that was fine, I felt rushed pretty much the whole time, but I figured they seen the selfie, and I asked nicely if I could get it shorter, 10 minutes I was out, only for me get home and realize I had the exact same hair cut I got last time from denise when I washed everything out. On top of everything else, I didn't know a complimentary beverage came with the whole haircut in the 2 times I had been, until bro before me got him and drink and left. I don't drink alcohol in public settings, but I would've drank a water if that was OK? I had no idea that chair switching went on until I also read Tyler and W's reviews, I thought i did something wrong, I always was respectful. I hate being negative but Now I'm stuck with this haircut that I now have to wait for it to grow back and get someone else to clip it and theres nothing that can be done. I tried with this place man. I really did. Can't anymore though.

Experiencia negativa: The last three times I’ve scheduled an appointment and selected a particular barber (through the app), I’m intentionally placed with a different barber once I arrive, and on time. I’m placed with a new, or newer barber that doesn’t give me the haircut I want. I always give awesome tips and am very respectful. Started going here because I’m a James Island local. Back to Barelli Barber.

Experiencia negativa: Service and skills are just not worth it for the price. When I came in, they set me up with the first hairdresser, but she seemed inexperienced and kept calling the manager over for help. I even asked if she was still in training, because I really don’t want an apprentice cutting my hair — especially at $50 a haircut. After a couple minutes (and after I mentioned I prefer not to chit-chat during the cut), they transferred me to Amanda. I don’t know if the first stylist got offended or not, but the whole thing felt awkward and unusual. With Amanda, I honestly had the same feeling other reviews mentioned — rushed, uneasy, with flashy movements and fumbling through my hair. Even though I showed reference pictures, the result didn’t really match what I asked for. She didn’t check in during the cut, which only added to the rushed feeling. The end result was just okay, but nowhere close to what I’d expect at this price point. I travel a lot and get my hair cut in many different places, and I’ve found plenty of cheaper shops that had better skill and customer service than this one. At $20–30 it might be fine, but at $40–50, I don’t recommend it. And one more thing that stood out to me: the reviews themselves. Looking around Charleston, most barbershops have anywhere from a few dozen to maybe a 100-200ish reviews, even if they’ve been around for years or much larger. This place, which has only been open about two years (about oldest reviews I can find here) and has less than 10 chairs, somehow has close to 900 reviews — almost all of them perfect five stars. That’s an unusually high number for a shop of this size and age. To me, it looks suspicious. Even the very best shops usually average out in the 4.7–4.8 range, because not every experience can be perfect. Here, the volume and near-perfect score just don’t add up naturally, and it leaves me questioning how those reviews were accumulated.

Experiencia negativa: I made a split decision to try somewhere new, as I wanted to see what the local shoppe was like. To give background, like most, my hair is a big insecurity and anxiety of mine. So, when I saw the 800 5 star reviews for this spot, I felt confident that I was going to have a good experience. Nothing was wrong with my former place, I just have never felt like I had the haircut I truly felt best in. Encouraged by my girlfriend and motivated by upcoming job interviews, I went to see Amanda at the Local Shoppe. I was really excited to try the place out, the vibes were really cool and everyone seemed nice. However, the experience itself really disappointed me. As soon as I sat down in the chair, I felt rushed to explain what I wanted and be done. During the haircut itself, I was scared by how quickly Amanda was cutting my hair with little regard for parting my hair correctly. The entire time it seemed like Amanda had somewhere more important to be and I was preventing her from being there. After I was rushed out of the shop $50 lighter, I got home and realized how poorly of a job she’d done. The back of my head is completely uneven, there’s little regard for texturing, and it looks nothing like the inspiration she quickly disregarded. I’m really sad that she couldn’t have taken ten extra minutes to finalize my cut. But she’s at least saved me the time to never come back to the local shoppe. I've lived on JI my whole life and it's sad not being able to recommend local places to people.

Experiencia negativa: They cancelled my appointment and automatically charged my card because I was a few minutes late. I will not be going back. Edit: attached is a screenshot of the cancellation policy I was emailed after booking. Nowhere does it anything about a 10 minute policy. I showed up to my appointment, so no, I did not consent to the fee. I was not 13 minutes late anyway, there was still plenty of time for me to get my haircut before the next appointment, they were just being lazy.

She was super cool and did a great job layering my mid-length hair and shaping it to my head shape. Experiencia fantástica: I've been to several places to cut my hair over the past few years living in Charleston and this has been one of the best if not THE BEST cut I've gotten. Riley did my hair on my first visit and she knocked it out of the park. She's my go to everytime now. I have double cowlicks in the back of my head and she really took her time to give me the cut I wanted, while working with my specific hair challenges. My past experiences at other places seemed very rushed, but I felt like she really took her time and made sure I left happy and looking my best. They did my son's hair as well and Amanda did an amazing job on his as well despite him not really knowing what he wanted initially.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been elsewhere and have the barber be uninterested or shown that they were irritated to do their job, and I’d walk out with a bowl cut. I called and they got me on same day. The joint was super cool, as was my stylist Denise. Turns out neither of us love Ohio. (The state, not the university) I left looking like someone you’d take home to meet your mother. Highly recommend visiting.
