Fantastic experience: Second time coming to this barber shop, the staff are friendly and very cool atmosphere. I chose Zac for the first time and second time that I have recieved a haircut and beard trim from him. He takes his time and does his best to make sure he is doing what you want done. He takes good notes on his clients and insures he asks several times how you feel about your hair. Definitely recommend Zac to anyone.

I think there aren't many classy places like this nowadays, and the best part is that the owner, John, is super cool. I've been looking for a place like this for six years, and now I've found it, and I'm happy because Zac, my barber, is my star barber.

Fantastic experience: I’ve never been one for haircuts. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had one bad experience after another — until today. My last visit to Great Clips near the Coliseum left me completely disappointed. I felt rushed, tossed around, and honestly uncomfortable. The haircut itself was painful, and to top it off, they charged me for a beard trim they didn’t even do. So this time, I decided to try something different — The Proper Barbershop. I’d never been to a real barber before, so I didn’t know what to expect. I booked a 5:20 PM appointment for just a beard trim and showed up about ten minutes early. Almost right away, I was greeted by Juleika, who made me feel completely at home. From the moment I sat down, I could tell this was a completely different experience. She asked multiple times if I was comfortable and if everything felt okay — something no one had ever done before. When I mentioned the awful haircut I’d gotten from Great Clips, she told me she could fix it and worked it into the appointment. What really stood out to me was how much care and respect she showed throughout the entire process. She even stayed past closing just to make sure everything came out right. When I finally looked in the mirror, I was honestly speechless. I barely recognized myself — in the best way possible. The confidence I felt in that moment was unreal. It might have just been another haircut and beard trim to her, but to me, it was something much bigger. Thank you, Juleika, for taking the time and care to make me feel like a brand-new person. As long as I’m in this area, The Proper Barbershop will have a forever customer in me.

The booking process was professional and smooth; They were able to squeeze me in same-day/last minute by adding me to the cancellation list, which I appreciated. Alex did such a great job listening to what I wanted and asking follow up questions for us to be on the same page before she started. Right away, her nine years of experience cutting hair showed as she fell into a second nature workflow with the cut. The shop was a relaxed and welcoming environment, with the rapport of the staff putting me at ease right away. The conversation with Alex was so natural and easy, the time actually flew by. Before I knew it she was finished and when she asked if I had any adjustments I wanted to make, I really looked hard and couldn’t find a single thing I would change. Im extremely pleased with both the experience and result of the haircut and would definitely return here again.

Fantastic experience: I've been getting my haircut from here for 3 years now. Akira is by far my favorite. However, the new room (old break room) she got moved to needs a TV and some new curtains. Otherwise, always the best experience here.

He checked in with me throughout the cut to make sure I was happy with how it was shaping up. Ended up with a low to skin fade that came out clean. Fantastic experience: Been going here for a couple years. Always do a pretty good job. I have had multiple different people cut my hair.

Negative experience: If you take pride in having a big full beard, this is not the place for you. More of a butcher shop than a barber shop. It has taken me 10 years to grow my beard to 10-12 inches and to be full. I was having just a trim done. She showed me about 2 inches of the bottom and asked if that was an acceptable amount to trim off. I agreed. She also asked if i wanted my beard squared or round. I said square. By time she was done I had a bald patch on the right of my face and maybe 2 inches of beard left and the bottom rounded. Needless to say, I am pissed. I wouldn't let these jokers cut my grass. Edit to respond: You did this at Tradition Brewing on fathers day. Don't try to deny your shortcomings! You FAILED own it!

Negative experience: I’m really disappointed with our experience at this barber shop, and unfortunately, this is the second time we’ve left unhappy with the cut. We asked for something pretty straightforward, and I thought I was clear in my request. However, the result was nothing like what my son envisioned. He’s 9 and was visibly upset while sitting in the chair, but being the kind kid he is, he didn’t speak up. He had grown his hair out for a while to get a specific style, and instead, the barber cut it all off. The staff is friendly, and the shop itself looks great, but after walking away disappointed twice, I’m honestly not sure we will be returning. It’s frustrating when expectations aren’t met, especially after taking the time to explain what we want.

Fantastic experience: This place is great, especially if you need facial hair care in addition to regular haircuts. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Conversations generally are open and people don’t act like you don’t belong in a conversation. To the specific service of haircut and facial hair services this place does a great job. I personally see Alexandria and she cares about what I want and doesn’t rush the conversation to understand. The entire experience is relaxing and comforting. She applies warm towels and products prior to shaving. Her cuts are top quality and extreme attention to detail is made to lining everything up, trimming eyebrows, ensuring my beard is clean looking. I especially like the straight razor to shave and line this up. I look forward to these appointments and I walk out feeling great. I highly recommend this place and Alexandria specifically. However it looks like you could be happy with any of the professionals here. I am a decent tipper so my price selected is with the tip.

Negative experience: TERRIBLE. I was a long standing customer of this place until today. I showed up early for my 10:40am appointment today. I wasn't greeted by anyone. Several other people came in, were greeted and were immediately given a haircut. Around 10:50am I asked if I'd been forgotten about and was then told that the person I was scheduled with was running behind. At 11:07am I asked to cancel my appointment as I couldn't wait any longer. Still don't know who was supposed to cut my hair as they never bothered to greet me, say how much longer I'd have to wait and see if that would be ok. Normally I don't mind waiting, but the service was so terrible that I will go somewhere else from now on.

Fantastic experience: Akira is back!!! She was my daughter's stylist a while back but moved away. So glad she is back! This time I was able to get a trim with Mrs. Akira and she was very professional and detailed. She did an amazing job and I would definitely recommend her services to anyone who is looking for a perfect haircut, whether male or female. I've seen her do cuts, trims, and beards while waiting to get my hair trimmed and everyone that walked out looked stunning! Overall exceptional service!!!!

Negative experience: 1st and last time I will visit this establishment! I will say that it is a nice shop and staff was friendly but.. I booked an hour hair and beard session but all I got was 32 min which is unsatisfactory, did not get what I paid for! Yes I could have said something when finished but in my opinion when you visit a high end barbershop you expect certain things, like listening to what the client says they want done when they first sit down and obviously that did not happen! Just not a good experience.

Negative experience: Went in and asked for a clean up without taking much off. Walked out with a a pencil lined mustache and a chin strap having all the hair removed on my neck. Not ok. Was not able to stop him once he started.

The staff is always welcoming and nice. I get a haircut about once a month and it's exactly what I asked for even if I'm not always sure what I want. Fantastic experience: As the name states, this is a PROPER barbershop, for the exact price I would expect!! Before coming here I struggled to find a good haircut. Being military, the Barbershop on base is okay, I’ve tried some off-base that were all not that great or messed up my hair a little. I was taken at the Port Warwick shop on short notice twice, The initial time was to prepare for a date when nobody else was able to take me in and the experience was just so great I had to come back. I cannot help but thank them for being some of the best barbers in the 757 Area!!

My beard looks great and I had a great time and so did my wife. Negative experience: Business owner seems rude when I asked him about his hairstylist that Is she good. If I go with the one he recommends my reason was to make sure the hairstylist working on my hairs is good I tried earlier a different hairstylist but she was not good and every-time I call either prior or same day haircut hairstylist are every time busy and when I gave him my honest review about this he felt offensive and cancelled by appointment so I am adding up my honest review on google because owner didn’t consider my review.

Positive experience: I really enjoyed my haircuts here. Went every 2-3 weeks for more than two years. But recently something has changed to where it’s so hard to find a haircut appointment that works with my schedule. My barber is impossible to book in the next 30 days but that’s as far out as the site will allow me to book. Tried someone new who cared and did a good job but he’s also hard to book. I guess I’ve had my last haircut here. Highly recommend if you have a relaxed schedule. Never had a bad haircut

Fantastic experience: I've been to both locations at least 4 times now and I cannot recommend these shops enough. My experiences the past couple times have been nothing short of great. Hector has provided a fantastic vibe and is easy to talk to, and of course has done fantastic work. As I've said, Hector at this location does an amazing job and Juleika at Ironclad does fantastic too. If you're in Newport News or the surrounding area and looking for a good, clean cut with a fantastic environment this is the place for you.

Positive experience: Scheduled appt for my spouse. Wanted to do something special for him. It was our first time there. Location is great. Place seemed very clean and neat. Jennifer was the one who provided the service. She seemed to be in a bad mood or something was bothering her at that time. As we were talking to her, explaining what we would like to be done, she paid more attention to messages on her Apple Watch and seemed aggravated. During the service she stopped few times to send messages on her watch as it couldn’t wait till she is done with a client. My husband told me the towel that placed on his head was extremely hot. In the end she didn’t offer to schedule next appointment. I give 4 starts because we still would like to come back. I believe this place has a good potential, but definitely would want to choose a different barber. I would not recommend her.

Fantastic experience: Getting a haircut here is like getting a haircut in your own home. Everyone here is very welcoming. Hector cut my hair, and he did an amazing job, very open with communication on what he was doing to my hair, really asked me asked me questions on how I wanted it to look, and took time to make it look precise!

Negative experience: I usually have a rlly good experience here, but without my knowledge I was used as a practice haircut for one of the employees who I guess just started. I was there for 2 hours and I walked out with the worst haircut I’ve ever gotten Luckily, but not so luckily, Jen stepped in. One of the most rude and unprofessional people I have ever met cut my hair to look nothing like the picture. Yeah she was quick and took over for the other person who shouldn’t be cutting hair to begin with, but she was cussing at me, telling me I don’t know what I want when I literally showed her a picture of the haircut I got from the same place a few months ago. I probably still will go here, but for anyone reading this and looking into going here… AVOID hector and Jen. Hector don’t know what he’s doing and Jen is one of the worst people I think I have ever witnessed

Fantastic experience: Waited two weeks for my appointment with Tahmina and it was well worth it. It was my first time and I gave pretty vague instructions and she stepped up recommended some things and off we went. She was fast and professional. Could not be happier. Everyone in the shop was friendly and everything was super clean.

Negative experience: The first time with them was a great experience, but the second made me never go back. Booked an appointment in advance the barber was out sick, and the appointment was canceled. Yes I did receive notice of this, but no mention of "Hey, let's reschedule or anything else." Left right before the holidays looking for a fresh cut. Thankfully for them not responding was able to find a great barber at another shop that was to get me in last minute.

Positive experience: Got rescheduled, totally fine. Hair cut, great. Shop, great. Cleanliness, great. But, Barber seemed to have an attitude, we brushed that off, everyone has off days. But, my issue is the dry shave, numerous knicks spots on my boyfriend’s neck. Missed spots. Kinda insulted my boyfriend for “jumpiness” jokingly. My partner has ASD. I just think it’s a little inappropriate to make fun of a customer. Especially when things were the way they were. Hopefully this person will have a better day tomorrow.
